Couples & Relationship Therapy in Stratford-upon-Avon and Online
Relationship therapy, also referred to as couples therapy, couples counselling, marriage counselling or relationship counselling, offers space to understand what is happening between you and how you want to move forward together.
Ego Therapy is based in Stratford-upon-Avon, with relationship therapy available in person and online. Online sessions can also allow couples to join from different locations where appropriate.
Why couples come to relationship therapy
Couples do not need to wait for a relationship to reach breaking point before coming to therapy. Some arrive in crisis. Others come because something between them has become harder to talk about, or because the same argument keeps returning without ever really being resolved.
Relationship therapy can provide space to explore:
- communication that has become tense, defensive or distant;
- recurring arguments and patterns of conflict;
- infidelity, betrayal and the loss of trust;
- emotional or physical disconnection;
- different needs, expectations or ways of expressing affection;
- changes brought by parenthood, work, illness or other life transitions;
- uncertainty about the future of the relationship;
- how each person experiences themselves within the relationship.
Communication and recurring patterns
The fast-paced world that we live in rarely offers much time to slow down and communicate carefully. Over time, conversations can become reduced to logistics, defensiveness or familiar arguments. Each person may feel they are trying to explain themselves while also feeling increasingly unheard.
Therapy creates space to look beneath the argument itself. What is each person trying to protect? What feels difficult to say directly? Which patterns belong to the relationship now, and which may have been learned much earlier?
Infidelity, betrayal and rebuilding trust
Infidelity and betrayal are common reasons couples seek relationship therapy. They can bring blame, guilt, anger, fear, grief and uncertainty into the room all at once.
Therapy does not assume in advance what the relationship should become. The work may involve understanding what happened, what it has meant to each person and whether trust can be rebuilt. For some couples, therapy becomes part of repairing the relationship. For others, it helps them make sense of what they want to do next.
Alex has particular experience working with relationship difficulties, including infidelity and the complex emotional impact that can follow it.
Conflict in relationships
Conflict is a normal part of being close to another person. The difficulty is often not that disagreement exists, but what happens around it. Some people pursue answers, some withdraw, some become angry and some work very hard to avoid disagreement altogether.
These responses can become patterns in their own right. Relationship therapy can help couples recognise those patterns, communicate more clearly and understand the needs or fears underneath them.
What happens in couples therapy?
The therapeutic process gives both people room to describe how they experience the relationship. The aim is not to decide who is right, but to understand the dynamic between you and create a conversation that is difficult to have when you are caught inside the same familiar pattern.
I offer a calm space to explore what has happened, what is happening now and how each of you feels about it, separately and together as a couple.

Starting relationship therapy
You do not need to arrive with a shared explanation of what has gone wrong. In fact, couples often come to therapy precisely because they understand the problem differently.
